Mathematics Math Sites  A subsection of Math

4Kids Games  Various good math and language arts games.   We found these games to be loud, fast, and good.

AAA Math Many teachers think this is one of the best math sites for online learning. Covers the math content requirements of most states. You now have to scroll part way down the page to get to Grade School Levels and Arithmetic Topics. Also, note their new URL, 321know.com.

Add Like Mad Quick addition game. Given a sum, add up numbers on a matrix in the fastest time. May be addictive.

After School Mathematics "The After School Math website is a full-featured math website for grades 5-8 created by after school staff and credentialed teachers. The site consists of 10 thematic activity modules, each with at least four activities. These content standard aligned activities are fun, hands-on, and provide opportunities for small group interaction, cooperation, and student leadership." Go for it!

Algebra (Point plotting and line graphing) from FunBased Learning. "Need to learn how to graph points? Here's a free, fun, interactive game by a former Math teacher that teaches you how. Play it online right now for free." Graph Mole (three levels) and Line Gem 1 are engaging and get the job done.

All About Measurement Part of AAA Math (see above.) The name says it all! Time, temperature, distance, more.

Angles is a BBC KS2 Bitesize math lesson. It explains angles, degrees, using a protractor, perpendicular and parallel lines. There's a cute but accurate practice game and a 10 question quiz. (This is the usual Bitesize format for any subject they teach.) Excellent online lesson for 4th grade through middle school.

Arcademic Skill Builders has math and word games ready to play online. You may recognize some games from the '80s and '90s here. Seem to remember playing them on TI99s and Apples, and they are still good for today! Worth your time to look these over.

Base 10 Blocks from Grain Valley School District, Missouri. This web page is a list of 15 units and tens games, mostly online.

Base 10 Box from Learning Box software. Lets primary kids click and drag base 10 sticks and base 1 pieces onto a blanket that displays the number. Very patient activity that lets kids make mistakes. Thanks Knollwood Knights.

BrainCake Welcome to the Girls' Math & Science Partnership, a program of Carnegie Science Center. Based in Pittsburgh, "BrainCake is an online sisterhood for girls 11 – 17 and stakeholders focused on girls’ inclusion in the areas of math, science, technology, and engineering. BrainCake.org features forums, programs, scholarships, virtual mentoring, girl blogs, podcasts, homework help, research and resources in a framework that integrates pop culture, science, and learning."

Coolmath4kids Kids learn and practice real-world math. Lemonade Stand is a favorite, but there are a lot more activities, including 20 more math games.

Cyberchase This site deserves more attention. The Games section has 45 good applied math games. Wow!

Uses .pdf files. From NCTM and others.

Downloads   Flash Cards free download game for Windows only. This is a great game. "It's a simple flashcard program that covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You can select any one of the operations to practice on, or have the program mix them up. Though the default is 10, facts up to 100 are selectable. Version 3.0 includes the ability to practice fractions. A timer or a clock runs in the background, and a count of correct/incorrect answers is displayed. This program is freeware. Enjoy."

Fraction Frenzy from Learning Planet. Match fractions of the same value by fast clicking. Increasing levels of difficulty.

Free Mathematics Books 258 math books available online for reading or downloading. We're talking high school to university-level mathematics here. "Here is an alphabetical list of online mathematics books, textbooks, monographs, lecture notes, and other mathematics related documents freely available on the web. I tried to select only the works in book formats, "real" books that are mainly in PDF format...The list is updated almost on a daily basis.."

New SiteFrog TestFrog Test Excellent easy(?) logic game. Some kids will see solutions quickly, others not so fast. This game from Brazil is popular in China, too.

Fun Mathematics Lessons by Cynthia Lanius A huge, great site from a great math teacher.

Download GCompris Our first app from France! Available in over 40 languages (see their main page for a list). "GCompris is an educational software suite comprising of numerous activities for children aged 2 to 10...Currently GCompris offers in excess of 80 activities and more are being developed. GCompris is free software, that means that you can adapt it to your own needs, improve it and, most importantly, share it with children everywhere." Computer discovery, color, sounds, memory, experiential, amusement, reading, mathematics, puzzles,telling time, money, and strategy games like macala. Some of these will really make a child think! Illuminations Official site of the National Council of Math Teachers (NCTM). Contains links to good, useful lesson plans, standards, tools, and web links (where the activities are!)

inch/mm Conversion Chart from Maryland Metrics. Handy chart compares inch fractions and decimals with their metric equivalents. The site also explains how to convert, and features a fast interactive conversion calculator. This is from an industrial supply firm in Maryland, where people use these tables in a real life business environment.

Informal Geometry by MathMastery Inc. Video clips and interactive, downloadable Flash videos cover Geometry in 13 progressive units from intro to perimeters up through volume. Also covers using a compass and a protractor. Elementary kids who know their times tables could use this easily. Another fine example of what you can find at Curriki!

Interactive Math "Welcome to the Interactive Math Site. All of the links listed on all pages are interactive (unless otherwise noted). All of the sites on this page contain a wide variety of interactive math activities at the grade levels indicated." Organized by grade level and by types of mathematics. Oodles of good math activities from the Tucson United School District.

Interactivate has 133 Java-based math Activities. You can browse by audience, subject, topic, or resource type. "Browse by audience" gets you a choice of Grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and college. The Discussion page has dialogues between a teacher and a student for 117 math topics! Each of these could be easily converted into a ready to go math lesson! The Lessons section has 90 ready to go NCTM lesson plans for print outs. The Tools section contains 44 of the activities pulled out of the Activities section. The Dictionary is a good, basic glossary of 188 math terms. The Textbooks sections is a MAJOR asset. Here, you can match ("Align") activities to chapters and lessons from textbooks from these series: Connected Math, Math Thematics, Mathematics in Context, and MathScape! Example: From MathScape Book 1, "What Does the Data Say?", Lesson 2, Name Exchange: You get two Interactivate Activities called Box Plot and Box Plot 2. The Standards section has NCTM math standards for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. This was a Kim Komando Cool Site of the Day. Note: This program requires Java.

"I mentor elementary teachers in math teaching and learning and originally built this resource for them. It was popular so I've made it available to teachers and kids across the country. If you could let students and teachers know about this resource, it would be greatly appreciated." No problem!

KS1 Bitesize Numeracy For elementary students. Eleven math games, each of three levels of difficulty. Cartoon characters, action, speech, and music. These games cover: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ordering sequences, place value, money (British), length & weight (metric), time, 2-d and 3-d shapes & symmetry, and organizing data. Very good learning activities that our elementary students actually liked! The BBC excels again!

KS3 Bitesize Maths For upper elementary through middle school/junior high in American parlance. Excellent, large group of well organized activities reviews and tests cover practically the entire math curriculum! Not cute and flashy like the KS1, but students can find anything they need to review in here. Presumes self-discipline or an attentive teacher, of course. Thank the BBC, who obviously put a lot of effort into this magnum opus.

Kids Numbers from KidsKnowIt. Excellent site with games (drills) that cover all the operations, plus money, telling time, intros to algebra and geometry.

Gold spinning star  Kid's Place Test Quest Houghton-Mifflin's Eduplace Site teaches kids how to take multiple choice tests! With animated coach and practice problems. Try this as a whole class session with a digital projector.

Line Jumper from Funbrain is one of our "most favoritist" number line games. It's a classic that still teaches. Five levels of difficulty ranging from 1 - 10 up into negative double digits.

Logic Zoo is a Cyberchase game from PBS Kids. Kids must place unique animals back in their (Venn diagram) zoos, classified by animal characteristics. Another thinking game and a way to introduce principles of logic.

Math Doesn't Suck and Kiss My Math. These are two books by Danica McKellar, of The Wonder Years, who grew up and earned a Bachelor's in Mathematics. Middle School girls (ages 11 to 14) like these books - some even love them. "How to survivve middle school math without losing your mind or breaking a nail." Her girl to girl style resonates with many girls. The math is sound and the problem solving techniques work. Using them this very evening with 11 and 12 year olds who are struggling with Least Common Multiples and Greatest Common Factors was rewarding. As any teacher knows, seeing students light up when they "get it" can make your day! This is a non-compensated endorsement.

MattiMath Glossary Harcourt's wonderful math glossary explains hundreds of terms with spoken pronunciations and animated shapes! Sorted by grade!

Math Hunt uses facts from Science and Social Studies to solve math problems. Neat way to integrate lessons. Also has lesson plans.

Math Magician Are you a Math Magician? Play these fast and timed flash card games and see! Upper and lower elementary operations (+ - * /) or choose mixed quizzes.

Math Open Reference "Mission: A free interactive math textbook on the web. Initially covering high-school geometry...Using interactive tools and compelling animations, it provides an engaging way to learn and explore the subject. Teachers will have new ways to teach, and the students a new way to learn that is fun and engaging." Anything you need to learn about high school geometry - plane, coordinate, or solid - it's in here! One example: Circles. Interactive with Java animations. Graphical functions explorers, too. This is absolutely amazing! Hard to believe it's free.

Math Playgound - Wow! This is an amazing math site! Math Games, Word Problems, Logic Puzzles, Math Videos! Thinking Blocks to model math problems, and wonderful online manipulatives. A simple Logo program complete with a turtle! The videos alone are worth your visit. Their video about learning the times tables is a classic, narrated by an elementary teacher who obviously loves the subject. This is a great way to spend a computer lab session, or you could assign parts of the site as homework.

Math Worksheet Center "What is Math Worksheet Center? A huge K-12 math worksheets resource! 8,000+ math worksheets. Complete math explanations! Not a plain old worksheet site! We give instructions on all core K-12 math skill areas. Math Worksheets Center is home to over 8,000 K-12 math worksheets, lessons, homework, and quizzes. We also offer over 130 free math teaching and learning articles." These are on their Mathtips page. This looks like an excellent site. You will have to subscribe for a nominal fee to get the most of what they offer.

Math worksheets generators Free! "LessonCorner's Math worksheets generators allow teachers to generate dynamic math worksheets for all grades in 4 easy steps." We checked these out and they work. You can crank out worksheets for everything from elementary addition through graphing and polynomials. Instructions are easy to follow and you can move back and forth as necessary. LessonCorner asked us to look at their free material, and we found it to be useful for teachers and homeschoolers.

Mathematics from Sadlier-Oxford Educational Publishing. This is excellent. Features both online and printable activities for grades K-6, prealgebra, and Algebra 1. Also has animated tutorial for reteaching or just for watching. Practice includes skills updates (a LOT of skills updates), Math Minutes, Problem of the Day, and Math Activites (interactive.) We're not done, they also feature an audio math glossary and interactive flash math activities. This site uses popups - so don't have popups blocked.

Mixing in Math An after school math activity site for parents, teachers, and caregivers. "Mixing in Math activities are:

* Quick ways to mix math in to what after-school programs already do: sports, snack time, arts and crafts, playground games;

Mudd Math Fun Facts Who says math is dry? This middle school + site's fun math facts really are fun.

Multiplication.com We love this site! "We have added over 100 new web pages. NEW lessons and instructional videos." The new Teach the Times Tables section is awesome! Lots of new things to explore! Their interactive games are constantly updated and are eminently playable. Plenty of good multiplication games, printable worksheets, resources, a lot more. Some games may also be purchased and downloaded. Stop reading this and go there! Great for homework - we know of teachers who assign this site. Honest. (Still true! as of Jan 29, 2010)

Cool  Multiflyer! Go directly to Multiflyer! Click "Skip to Multiflyer." On the next page, click Yes or No. On the next page, click How to Play if you're a newcomer. Otherwise choose Practice or Play. Make sure you check out out all options before clicking Start! Use the multiplication table grid if you need help. Click Lock All at the end of each set of problems, then blast off to explore the planets. Click Next Mission to continue. Wonderful math game! You may now buy, download, and install this game, too.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives Interactive online manipulatives for preschool through high school! Broken out by grade level and subject matrix. This is a great site!

Number Munchers  It's back! Play Number Munchers online at this tribute site! The problems are harder and the bad guys are smarter, so beware! Other than that, a faithful copy of that old 1980's MECC game. Show your kids what YOU played on Apple 2e's in computer class. Does not play well on less than Windows XP.

Number Nut is a math site from the 4Kids! people. Good information and some interesting online math activities, similar in principle to the great AAA Math site. Sorted by Basic and Advanced lessons and activities, the site covers most of the elementary math curriculum. We think it's worth your valuable time to take look here.

Number Time This fun lower elementary site has songs about math signs and number lines. Also has the Addem video series, about Addem's mathematical adventures with his ant friends. Several good math games such as "Snakes and Ladders" and "Test the Toad" (number line practice). Check the menu on the left of the page for more games and options. Part of the vast, excellent BBC Schools site.

Probability Simulations From Maths Online: "The following Flash movies simulate typical probability experiments. Carry out the experiments in the usual way with the whole class and then run the simulations to generate a large number of trials." You plug in the numbers, the simulator runs the trials! Coin flips, spinners, a sack simulation, and rolling dice.

Pythagoras Theorem (called Pythagorean Theorem in the US) This site explains everything about the Theorem. It includes a video and links to more information. A good resource. Thanks to Darren Cross.

Roman Numerals Explains what Roman numerals are, how they work, and has a handy base 10 to Roman numeral converter!

Saxon Math - Basic Facts Practice   If kids need to drill, this site is the place to do it! Very good and well organized site. Part of Saxon's always good online activities. In these times when many public schools are discouraging math drills, sites like this one become essential for your child's math education. (Please do not blame the teachers, it is not their fault.)

Spacey Math from Learning Planet. Choose one of the four elementary operations and go! Shoot the spaceships by answering problems correctly.

Downloads  Timez Attack "The Ultimate Multiplication Tables Video Game" This game is wonderful, and the base (2s-12s) version is a free download.  Everything Big Brainz says is true, kids love this game.

Visual Fractions Excellent interactive site for learning about fractions. Great for large group sessions using a digital projector attached to the computer.

What would I weigh on another planet? Here's a site to teach elementary or older kids some mathematics, astronomy, and physics, all at one go. The site explains why weight varies on other worlds and then lists the formula for calculating weight on each individual planet, our moon, and the sun! Easy to read and straightforward. It's also a good opportunity to remind students that weight does not equal mass. Thank you to elementary science teacher Kristi N. for suggesting this site to us!

Counting & Changing Money Dollar signs A subsection of Math

BBC 'Money' Games "Here are eight games that use money." Specifically, pounds and pence! The coins and notes will look different to Americans, but the math is the same! Good for looking outside the box, or if you are a UK resident, a nice change from that boring US money. Try them all! Wedding Planner (fun!) is for older students, the rest are elementary age appropriate.

Change Maker from Funbrain teaches kids to make change using the count-up method. Click the coins to make change, then press Go. Thanks Mel.

Count the Money from Math Playground. Add coins to make a given amount in dollars and cents. Good graphics. Thanks Dustin.

Counting Change from Quia is a matching game. Match a money amonut ("$.25") with its coin equivalent ("2 dimes + 1 nickel"). Uses Java. Thanks Mel.

Counting Money from ABCya! Very good interactice with sounds, four different difficulty levels, US coins and dollar denominations. You can make this game give a false result if you put in coins where dollars would have fit (such as putting in four quarters instead of a dollar bill), so discourage your kids from doing that. This was actually fun to play - loved the tropical fish!

Learn To Count Money  This is Play To Learn's money counting game.

Money in Your Pocket from NumberNut.  Discusses coins, has four coin counting activities. Worth a look.

Bornthinker.com Smiley Clock Kids decorate an animated clock by correctly telling the time. Needs Shockwave and Flash. Scroll down to Smiley Clock and click Play.

New SiteClockworks from KS1 Bitesize Numeracy covers Hours, half hours and minutes; also one of the few that asks "what time will it be in..." Three levels, five stages in each. Good stuff.

Interactive Clock from Time-for-Time show hours, minutes, digital, and current time. Good teaching aid, listed by Wilson School.

Learn to Tell Time  (New URL!) "(Learn to tell time using a standard clock face in increments of 5 minutes.) NOTE: JAVA is required for this learning tool."

Downloads   Tellin' Time Free download, game for Windows only. From the author: "I put this together for my kids to practice reading the time off of an analog clock. It's based on a flashcard type game where an analog (12 hour) clock face displays a random time. The child is then expected to enter the "digital equivalent". A four minute timer runs in the background, and a count of correct/incorrect answers is displayed. This program is freeware. Enjoy."
