GNUmber
Munchers
"is an educational math program based on MECC's early 80s munchers games,
with new graphics." So writes Will Heublein, whose two fun and playable
Number Munchers tributes are your freeware alternative to hunting down those
old games and trying (usually without success) to make them run again. OK,
so these are not exact clones of the MECC games, but they're close enough!
We've been using them with elementary and middle school students for a few
years now and they get the job done. No mouse needed, just use the arrow keys.
GNUmber
Munchers 2010 is an online beta version that runs fine on Internet
Explorer. We wish more people would emulate Mr. Heublein and redo some of
the good old MECC games! To
download these games: Go to the very bottom of the GNUmber Munchers page where
it says "Old Windows versions (Downloadable .exe files):" Standard
version is for upper elementary/middle/jr high students, Elementary is for
elementary kids. What

HOT X: Algebra Exposed! Danica McKellar is back! This time she explains algebra to girls. Is she qualified? Here's her chops: "Best known for her roles on The Wonder Years and The West Wing, Danica McKellar is also a three-time New York Times bestselling author, internationally-recognized mathematician and advocate for math education. A summa cum laude graduate of UCLA with a degree in Mathematics, Danica has been honored in Britain's esteemed Journal of Physics and the New York Times for her work in mathematics, most notably for her role as co-author of a ground-breaking mathematical physics theorem which bears her name (The Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem)." So yeah, she's qualified. What we like about this book, and all her math books for tween and teen girls is - she's been there & done that - she explains things in a special girl-to-girl BFF way, without dumbing down the math. Teen girls and co-eds use this book and it really helps!

A subsection of Math
6 Great Websites With Money Games for Kids <Actually there are 4 games here - Escape from Knab and Bad Credit Hotel have bad links.> Collected and evaluated by the good people at Educational Freeware (Check them out!) Lots of sites teach counting money and making change - these teach managing money! "A combination of both private and public organizations have created a high quality collection of websites that are fun for kids but also teach important lessons about finances and managing money." You should know that if EF likes them they are GOOD. Go have a look!
All About Money is a good, long listing of 40 money learning activities, both online and printable, with lesson plans, too. Broken into sections: Identifying Money, Counting Money, Using and Spending Money, Earning Money, Saving Money, and Additional Resources. Kudos to Interbank FX LLC of Salt Lake City, Utah for putting this together. Special thanks to Cara Chandler at Arroyo Vista Charter School in Chula Vista, California, and her 5th graders, especially Kyle!, for the email re: this site! You guys find the coolest things! Keep 'em coming!
BBC 'Money' Games "Here are eight games that use money." Specifically, pounds and pence! The coins and notes will look different to Americans, but the math is the same! Good for looking outside the box, or if you are a UK resident, a nice change from that boring US money. Try them all! Wedding Planner (fun!) is for older students, the rest are elementary age appropriate.
Change Maker from Funbrain teaches kids to make change using the count-up method. Click the coins to make change, then press Go. Thanks, Mel.

Counting Money from ABCya! Very good interactice with sounds, four different difficulty levels, US coins and dollar denominations. You can make this game give a false result if you put in coins where dollars would have fit (such as putting in four quarters instead of a dollar bill), so discourage your kids from doing that. This was actually fun to play - loved the tropical fish!
Counting Money from Harcourt. Simple but good coin counting activity.
Counting Money from Northpole. Counting coins and bills, from the excellent Christmas activity site.
Dollar-a-Glass Game from BizKids. A new lemonade stand game that is colorful, fast-paced and gives lots of choices for players. Lets you practice running a small business.

put this together for my kids to practice reading the time off of an analog

face displays a random time. The child is then expected to enter the "digital
equivalent". A four minute timer runs in the background, and a count
of correct/incorrect answers is displayed. This program is freeware.
