The World's Deadliest Animal: The Mosquito

credit: Clifford Cross II

"The animal you see in the photo is a mosquito.
It looks basic and yet it's built like a perfect machine.
Upon examination with an electron microscope and other
modern devices, the mosquito forms as follows:
On her little head there are exactly 100 eyes. In her mouth,
which can hardly be seen even under a microscope, 48 teeth.
In the chest, one for the center and two for the wings,
there are 3 hearts and in each heart 2 auricles and 2 ventricles.
This little mosquito has a heat receptor to find living things
with heat. The heat sensitivity of this device is one thousandth
of a degree Celsius. A very advanced blood analyzer, and also
an anesthetic device to easily absorb the blood, so that its
victim does not react to the sting. And also an anticoagulant
device to be able to absorb the blood. There are six tiny blades
on its suction pipe; with four of them he makes a square
incision and with the other two he forms a tube to absorb
the blood. They also have claws and hooks on their feet to
hold on to their food source."

The Unsung Heroes Who Ended a Deadly Plague

"How a team of fearless American women overcame medical skepticism
to stop whooping cough, a vicious infectious disease, and save countless
lives."

.

Smithsonian Magazine article from March 2022. "Pertussis, otherwise known
as whooping cough, means little to most parents in the developed world
today. But it was once among the great terrors of family life."
Drs.Kendrick and Eldering assembled their own team, got the community
behind them, found donors, and then - "Kendrick, Eldering, and their team
succeeded in developing the first safe and effective whooping cough vaccine."
Read the whole inspiring story of this noble quest in the article. There
are newer vaccines now, but none are better.
Remember this:
THERE IS STILL NO CURE FOR WHOOPING COUGH!!
Get your kids vaccinated! Whooping cough can kill you.

How a long-forgotten virus could help us solve the antibiotics crisis - by Alexander Belcredi
Viruses have a bad reputation -- but some of them could one day save your life, says
biotech entrepreneur Alexander Belcredi. In this fascinating talk, he introduces us to phages,
naturally-occurring viruses that hunt and kill harmful bacteria with deadly precision, and shows
how these once-forgotten organisms could provide new hope against the growing threat of
antibiotic-resistant superbugs. from TED-ED

Top things to know about Ebola

Ebola information for kids from Brenner Childrens Hospital, is a short
and fact-filled page about Ebola, written for kids. Your kids should read it.
Everything they need to know is there.
Remember, Ebola is NOT an airborne virus.
It is not spread by coughing or sneezing.

CDC Warns Of Fast-Spreading Enterovirus Afflicting Children (from NPR) Asthmatics are especially at risk from Enterovirus D68 (or EV-68, or EV D-68). It starts out with common cold-like symptoms, then suddenly the child can't breathe. "The sick patients have all been children and teenagers, and 68 percent have a history of asthma or wheezing." (NPR). A Denver Post article stated over 900 patients (ages newborn to 21) have been seen in hospitals there. The CDC's page of Enterovirus D68 facts has a great deal of information, (1) For General Public and (2) specific advice For Healthcare Professionals. CDC also gives some advice on prevention:

"You can help protect yourself from respiratory illnesses by following these steps:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick"
  •

Impact of vaccines The Unbelievable Impact of Vaccines "With the exception of safe water, no other modality, not even antibiotics, has had such a major effect on mortality reduction," declared the WHO and UNICEF report on The State of the World's Vaccines and Immunization. Don't believe it? Think again." See this fact-filled infographic at 100% by clicking on it. Safe water? It's true. That's for another entry, though.

Here are four "good sites" from our Health section that can help fight germs! (Wash your hands and cough into your elbow.)

Washing your hands is a good defense, but you MUST do it correctly! Warm water and scrub for 20 seconds.
Do not forget to clean under your fingernails.

Scrub Club! NSF's site about washing hands is full of songs, games, and activities!  Emphasizes the six steps of properly washing and why it is so important. Kids enjoy the games and the "Webisode." This makes a good health filler in computer lab. In this time of Flu and Enterovirus D68, this site is a powerful tool against disease.

Microbiology from the American Museum of Natural History.  Bacteria in the Cafeteria game and How Lou Got the Flu. A fun way for kids to learn some disease vector basics.

Flu "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the flu vaccine for all people age 6 months and older. If you're a kid, that means you!" Find out all sorts of things about influenza, innoculation*, and prevention at this site. From KidsHealth.

Flu.gov Lots of good info about avian influenza A (H7N9) and influenza in general. Check out the videos for kids, too.

Five Important Reasons to Vaccinate Your Child "As you help your kids get ready for school, make sure they're fully vaccinated. Making sure that children of all ages receive all their vaccinations on time is one of the most important things parents can do to ensure their children's long-term health as well as the health of friends, classmates, and others in the community." Diptheria, measles, and especially whooping cough are making a comeback. Any of them can kill a baby or small child. This site has vaccination schedules for different ages up through teenagers and lots of other vital information.

The Black Death Excellent one page lesson with graphics, from Mr.Dowling. He has a ton of lessons like this, to download for free!

Hooke's drawing of a fleaThe Black Death: Bubonic Plague from TheMiddleAges.net. A one page summary with many links, including a relevant excerpt from Boccaccio's The Decameron. TheMiddleAges.net is a big site, with plenty of links and information about various topics from the time.

BAM! Body and Mind is the "for kids" area of the US government's CDC site (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Primary grades could use parts of this, with teacher guidance. Older students can move through these pages easily.
Coming straight down from the top of the page, there is the Feature Zone with four tabs displayed. "Please click on a tab below to see the current features" implies that they change periodically. Features at this time are:
1 The Immune Platoon - "A super-powered team of white blood cells protecting your body from infections and other disease that threaten your body's health."
2 Bully Roundup - Dealing with bullies - practical advice, with a cowboy theme
3 Physical Activity This section features Activity Cards: Is there an activity you want to know more about? Not sure of how to play or what gear you'll need? Two sections: 1- Don't Let Asthma Keep You Out of the Game. Today, more than ever, asthma is not a barrier to physical activity; and 2- U Can Do It 2. Whatever your challenge, if you ever wondered, "Can I be an athlete?", the answer is "YES"!
4 H2O Smartz - When you're outside and active, make sure you know how to keep your smarts around the water. Don't forget to learn all about sun safety too!!
Along the left margin the are links to more topics: Diseases, Food & Nutrition, Physical Activity (same as in the Feature Zone), Your Safety (includes Bully Roundup and H2O Smartz), Your Life "Got stress, conflict, and other pressures? These ideas and tools can help.", and Your Body "Puberty might feel confusing, but with BAM! it all makes sense." , "Help Kristie make all the right decisions to keep her teeth clean." and "Find out how heredity and your genes help make you who you are." There are eight topics in all.
There is also a Game Room section of eight games. "Check out the BAM! Game Room. Try the games that will teach you more about your body and mind. It is a fun way to learn. "
There is an Information for Teachers section, too. "Teachers: Incorporate BAM! topics into your classroom activities."
A lot of effort went into making this a quality site.

It is being rehosted here with permission. You can click on the above hyperlink to view the original and engage in the lively discussion in the comments section." Fairly lengthy pro-vaccination (= pro scientific facts) article on why you need to get your kids vaccinated. Dr. Raff lists the common anti-vax arguments and destroys each one. She provides links to reputable sources to back up everything she writes. Everyone should be vaccinated, adults and kids both.

This is an EXCELLENT graphic! Pay attention to what a dog is telling you.

    Dog_afraid_of_baby.jpg
Teach children to respect a dog's space! Too many dogs end up in shelters (or worse, put down) because the adults in charge were not monitoring the child/dog situation. Many times when a dog bites a kid parents say, "There were no warnings. He just bit him for no reason." The unfortunate truth is that there are almost always warning signs, but the humans miss them. This photo shows a few warning signs that the dog is uncomfortable and may bite.

Health and Growth, Keeping Healthy, and Teeth and Eating are three great kid health sites from the BBC.  Each has a Revise Bite (online textbook), a good Activity to keep kids engaged, followed by a Quiz. We linked to the Revise Bites, and links to the activities and quizzes are on each page at the bottom. See if kids can keep Ben healthy in a Neo-Pet type activity! Links to excellent explorations of all the above areas, with an exceptional section on blood. For upper elementary through high school.

How do we smell? How smelling works, not what we smell like! A 4:20 video from TED-Ed. "An adult human can distinguish up to 10,000 odors." Kids can't do as well, because of lack of experience. "You use your nose to figure out what to eat, what to buy and even when it’s time to take a shower. But how do the molecules in the air get translated into smells in your brain? Rose Eveleth charts the smelly journey through your olfactory epithelium and explains why scent can be so subjective." She also explains what your "olfactory epithelium" is. Easy to understand and you can even "Flip This Lesson", (customize and share your lesson). Rose Eveleth comes out smelling like a rose for this video!

Human Biology section of KidsKnowIt. Good and simple explanations.

Kid's Air from the EPA (The United States Environmental Protection Agency) This site has simple educational online activities about air quality for kids. There are two sections. There's a colorful and easy to understand section for K-1s (5 - 7 years). It explains the different air quality colors with the help of Buster the Butterfly. There are three easy games to play.
The other section is for ages 7-10. "What should you do when the Air Quality Index is orange? Let the chameleons K.C., Koko, and Kool, show you how EPA measures pollution in the air." Koko is asthmatic and sensitive to air quality. There are five activities that explain that air can be clean or dirty, the air quality color codes, air pollution and health, what to do on bad air days, and some games. The games are actually informal quizzes on the material.
Both sections have areas for teachers and other adults. This is a well done and age appropriate site.

KidsHealth Kids learn about health and their bodies. Good, interactive site. Really good section on body changes during adolescence, too.

KidsHealth in the Classroom is a new part of the popular KidsHealth site. "Get on board with KidsHealth's new online resource for educators! We integrate academics when we can. It seems that both learning and running are more fun for kids when they are combined." Owned and operated by working teachers.

Let's Move (renamed Healthy Kids, Healthy Future), is a website "which features many tips for making simple changes in the areas of nutrition and physical activity as a way of living a healthier life. Medieval remedy for modern day superbug This link goes to the IFLS article. It's easier for
kids to understand. The original University of Nottingham article is here. It includes a great video
featuring microbiologist Dr Freya Harrison and her team, and Dr. Christina Lee, the expert translator
of the recipe. (The English in the book is so old it required a translator.) "The centuries-old recipe
for treating eye infections calls for two types of Allium (garlic and onion or leek), wine, and oxgall
(that’s bile from a cow’s stomach). The instructions, translated by University of Nottingham’s Christina
Lee, are incredibly specific: It requires the use of a brass pot for brewing, a particular straining
technique to purify it, and the mixture must be left for nine days before use." The scientists followed
the recipe exactly. They found out this eye salve from the 900s kills MRSA! We wonder what other
cures might be hiding in these ancient books?

Mumps is another old time virus, trying to make a comeback.
Fast Facts about Mumps from the CDC discusses this illness,
which attacks the salivary glands. Complications of mumps can include:

  • Inflammation of the testicles (orchitis) in males who have reached puberty, which rarely leads to sterility
  • Inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and/or tissue covering the brain and spinal cord (meningitis)
  • Inflammation of the ovaries (oophoritis) and/or breasts (mastitis) in females who have reached puberty
  • Temporary or permanent deafness

This 15-Year-Old Kid May Have Just Saved Your Life is the name of an article on Crooks & Liars * about Jack Andraka, who has invented a new test for pancreatic cancer that is "168 times faster, over 26,000 times less expensive and over 400 times more sensitive. And what I found is that my sensor in a blind study it actually had a 100% correct diagnosis, in diagnosing pancreatic cancer and could diagnose the cancer before it actually became invasive." We hope this example inspires many other young people to believe in themselves, and to do some creative tinkering for the benefit of all of us. Comes with a video. (*The name of the publication does not reflect on the veracity of the article.)
Jack Andraka has created a pancreatic cancer test that is 168 times faster and considerably cheaper than the gold standard in the field. He has applied for a patent for his test and is now carrying out further research at Johns Hopkins University in the US city of Baltimore.
And he did it by using Google.
The Maryland native, who won $75,000 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May for his creation, cites search engines and free online science papers as the tools that allowed him to create the test." (credit: insideofiran.org)

You Don't Know Jack A video by Morgan Spurlock. This is a 3:34 Vimeo video about Jack Andraka, who we posted about earlier this year. "Jack Andraka, a high school sophomore, has developed a revolutionary new test for pancreatic cancer." The video covers his struggles to find lab space, 199 rejection letters, a non-supportive family. The scientific establishment did't want to hear new ideas from an 8th grade. With the help of a good teacher, Jack persisted, and finally got lab space. The rest is, and will continue be, history. Give the kids a chance!

Vaccinate your baby and Vaccinate your family Educational site for parents that explains why you need to vaccinate your babies, as well as older kids, adults, and grandparents. Explains why the anti-vaccination hysteria is a hoax, fake news. Links to scientific articles, when to vaccinate, history of vaccination, the Risks of Missing or Delaying Vaccines, and more.

Vaccines Work, Here Are the Facts This is an infographic page, it's in comic strip form, it's readable and well-written. It covers all the facts about how vaccines work, the "arms race" between vaccines and viruses, and why there was a panic about autism (This was a hoax, a deliberate lie.) This strip gives the facts about the different lies that are spread by conspiracy theory anti-vaccination people. As you read down the page, you discover facts about anti-vaxers as well. The concept of "herd immunity" is well explained. The result of foolish people not vaccinating their children is a decrease in herd immunity, and therefore more "old-time" diseases are coming back! "Like diseases, fear and misinformation spread easily to those who aren't vaccinated against them." So read this page and "get vaccinated"!

Vaccination: ‘I Will File A CPS Report’: Pediatrician’s Blunt Message About Vaccines Is Going Viral Vaccines work. Do not argue. Vaccination is NOT controversial. Get your offspring vaccinated. Read Dr Ginsberg's post. Debating vaccination is like debating gravity - science does not care if you believe it or not! Watch the video. Why are old forgotten diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and whooping cough making a comeback? Because too many young parents are not vaccinating their kids, due to hysteria or peer pressure. This makes their innocent children a public health menace. People who don't vaccinate should be forced to do so by court order.
Make sure you vaccinate on time, too. Those shot schedules were set by experts. Please do not alter them just because YOU don't like watching your kid cry. Your kids overreact because they learned that behavior from you! Be a good parent. Be a responsible citizen of your country and the world. Be an adult - get it done.

Why You Are Still Alive - The Immune System Explained An animation of the immune system by Kurzgesagt. "Every second of your life you are under attack. Bacteria, viruses, spores and more living stuff wants to enter your body and use its resources for itself. The immune system is a powerful army of cells that fights like (put your favorite simile here) and sacrifices itself for your survival. Without it you would die in no time. This sounds simple but the reality is complex, beautiful and just awesome." As with all their videos, there's a great soundtrack, and a narration with a dry humor that's worthy of Hitchhiker's Guide.
